The roads are rough! This picture is the courtyard of our hotel, the Vivaana. We were greeted by peacocks, drums, and trumpets. Lovely ambiance.
We traveled yesterday to the “new Silk Road ” capital of India, called the Shekhawati region. It is known for its painted havelis and old forts. The havelis contain courtyards, exquisitely latticed windows, intricate mirrors, vaulted ceilings, immense balconies, and ornate gateways and facades. They date from the British Raj, during which traditional overland trading routes to Central Asia, Europe, and China were slowly superseded by rail and sea routes.
