Thoughts on Beijing

We have had a delightful time in this capital city of China.

The Waldorf was an intimate hotel (by Beijing standards) with the ultimate attention to detail. It was so nice to have such a luxurious haven to return to each day.
The China Guide private tour with guide and driver was very worthwhile since no one speaks English and no one writes in cursive. You should see the street signs!
The city of 23 million is indescribable. The traffic is overwhelming. We did not attempt the metro system, but it is really the only way to move around. They are limiting new car permits to only 24000 per year. Too little to late.
I cannot comment on the air quality because until today it has been bright blue sky and 80 degrees. Today is more overcast but we are leaving in about 15 minutes. It must be bad because you should see the respirators provided to all guests. Bigger than a gas mask for a saran gas attack. Very heavy duty!

All is wonderful so far.
